The main span of the Hardanger Bridge is 1,310 meters (4297.9 ft) – 20 metres longer than the Golden Gate Bridge of San Francisco. This makes the bridge the longest in Norway and 9th longest in the world.
The towers of the bridge must stand on shore due to the depth of the fjord. The maximum water depth near the bridge is about 500 metres (1,600 ft), and the mountains surrounding the fjord are about 1,200 metres (3,900 ft) high.
